Stanford Longevity Challenge 2024 x Next Innovation Scholars

Yasmine Shaban, Cecelia Favorito, and Vikram Mishra of NIS worked together to build a pitch for SLC 2024 and their concept is under review.

The challenge urges designers and participants to view life transitions as a feature rather than a bug. People are more capable of facing many transitions in their lifetime and so how might we bring ease and meanningfulness to those transitions?

At the time, Cecelia was in Italy and Vikram was in Germany for study abroad while Yasmine was working for P&G in Cincinnati but traveling to London and Italy over her weekends.

Yasmine met up with Cecelia in Florence, Italy and connected with Vikram over Microsoft Teams as they developed their concepts. Their time together birthed “Akin”.

Akin empowers people a way to choose their family,
fostering intergenerational connections based on curiosity and wisdom in a shared home.

Akin is a service that connects individuals through their life transitions by welcoming them into a community of intergenerational care exchanges. Similar to an au-pair service, Akin empowers two audiences, homeseekers and careseekers. Homeseekers are in search of a new place to explore and live in to deepen their roots while having access to affordable housing. While, careseekers, often older individuals, are looking for company, connections, and low-level assistance with their day to day needs.
